The X-Series Secret: Built Not in a Lab, But on YouTube

At FLiK Pickleball, we believe the best product designer isn't an engineer—it's the athlete who uses the gear every single day. That philosophy defined the development of our certified paddle line, starting with the X1, through a process we call "Designed by Debate."

Our founder, Fred Robinson, didn't rely on industry norms when creating the X-Series. Instead, he took his decades of competitive racquet sport experience and focused it entirely on listening. He became a devout student of YouTube University, meticulously watching video reviews, podcasts, and online forums.

Fred sat with a notepad, making extensive lists of everything the sport's most vocal critics and popular reviewers liked and, crucially, disliked about existing high-end paddles.

Crowdsourced Perfection: From Notes to the X1

The result was the X1 paddle—a product that was, quite literally, a crowdsourced design. It incorporated the solutions to common flaws that the broader pickleball community had been begging manufacturers to fix.

For instance, Fred's background immediately led him to address the handle. After decades of playing, he knew the value of a perfect grip, so he developed the X1 with a style that offered excellent feel and control. This design philosophy extended into the X2 and X3, which were among the first paddles to popularize longer handles specifically to facilitate the growing trend of two-handed backhands.

Our process is simple: We remove what people don't like, and we add what they do.

The Ironic Success of the F1 Power Paddle

Our commitment to innovation and iterative design often leads us to surprising results, which is exactly the story of the F1 paddle.

During development, we were actively seeking certification for several high-performance prototypes. Our goal was to launch a line that emphasized precision and controlled power. However, the complex USA Pickleball (USAP) certification process, specifically the PBCoR test (which purports to measures power), proved unpredictable.

We decided to experiment. We submitted one prototype that was equally as powerful as our others, but we added two unique elements just to see if they would influence the results:

1. We included small holes in the paddle core, a design choice intended to reduce weight.

2. We incorporated a fiberglass patch onto the surface.

To our utter surprise—and the surprise of the entire industry—that modified model passed the rigorous PBCoR test.

An Unintended Powerhouse

Once the F1 was released, the pickleball community was stunned. Reviewers and players immediately identified the F1 as a true powerhouse—a paddle with far more pop and velocity than seemed legal but that passed certification. It clearly hits like a paddle that should not have passed the PBCoR standards.

Despite our initial attempts to produce a softer paddle, we had accidentally created an explosive, market-leading power paddle. Because people loved it, and because it passed the test, we put it into full production.

The PBCoR Test Discrepancy

This experience crystallized something crucial for us: the PBCoR test does not accurately measure a paddle's true on-court power.

Proof of this disconnect came with our subsequent paddle, the Falcon. The Falcon is designed as a far less powerful, more control-oriented paddle than the F1. Yet, when we submitted it for testing, the Falcon actually received a slightly higher score on the PBCoR test than the F1!

This disparity lends powerful credibility to our belief that the standard regulatory test is fundamentally unreliable.

The F1 stands as a powerful symbol of our commitment: we innovate constantly, we test relentlessly, and sometimes we accidentally create exactly what the market wants—regardless of what the rulebook says.

A Breakthrough Built on Listening

The experience was both humbling and clarifying. While we had accidentally created exactly what the market seemed to crave—raw power—it proved the ultimate effectiveness of our approach. We had created a paddle that succeeded on multiple levels: it passed certification, performed exceptionally well, and generated exactly the kind of attention a small, innovative company needs.

The FLiK X-Series and the F1 are proof that listening to player critique and embracing constant iteration is the most effective R&D strategy. We are always watching, always testing, and always refining.
